Things to see and do in Rarotonga

We are so lucky to have a choice of stunning Pacific island destinations at our doorstep, including the beautiful Cook Islands. Rarotonga is pure magic, a place where every moment feels like a pinch-me experience.

Whether for relaxation, romance, family fun and adventure - you can have it all in this beautiful unspoilt tropical paradise which enjoys a warm climate all year. Here you won’t find traffic lights or a McDonald's, there are no buildings higher than a coconut tree and everything runs on Island Time. Cook Islands offers a collection of wow moments that will stay with you forever.

Ready to explore the adventure, the culture, and the beauty that make Rarotonga a bucket-list destination? Here are some of our favourite things to see and do in this Pacific paradise!

1. Take in the local culture at an Island Night

This is a great way to experience the vibrant local culture. The bigger resorts put on an Island Night & Dinner Show at least once a week, with traditional song and dance and an island-style feast known as an umukai.

Visit the Te Vara Nui Village – Overwater Night Show & Buffet - this stunning show delivers an electric authentic cultural performance like no other. Enjoy a delicious traditional island night buffet fusing local island tastes from world-class Umukai and sample the culinary skills of local and European Chefs. With compelling legend stories set over the water portraying the past and fast hip-shaking dances with resounding beats of drums and rhythms of song and dance, this spectacular setting and performance are guaranteed to lift the hairs on the back of your neck

2. Load up on the freshest seafood while dining out

Book your table on the grand verandah at Tamarind House and sit back and enjoy some of the finest food on Rarotonga. The atmosphere is elegant and classically South Seas.

3. Get involved in the night life

There are certainly enough bars and pubs in Rarotonga to keep you entertained. And no trip to Raro is complete without a visit to the iconic Trader Jack's - a popular night spot and it can get lively on a Friday night! Or if you’re up for a pub crawl island style, the Going Troppo Nightlife Tour is a must-do for the young and young at heart.

“Going Troppo Party Bus runs every Wednesday & Friday night and perfect nightlife tour for visitors who want to laugh and dance the night away in the safe hands of a trusted local guide.”

4. Swim with the turtles

They say your first encounter with a sea turtle in its natural habitat is one you’ll treasure for years to come. The Ariki Adventure Guides take you on an underwater journey, exploring the marine life below while educating you on how to share the ocean with these gracious turtles with little disruption to them or the environment.  The sea scooters are eco-friendly, easy to operate and fun. We recommend you swim comfortably in deep water.

5. Score a find at Punanga Nui Market

Head to these markets on Saturday morning for handicrafts, colourful clothing and black pearls – you’re sure to pick up a souvenir or two!

6. Go for a splash in a hidden waterfall

On the eastern side of the island, a dirt road leads inland to Wigmore’s Waterfall, a lovely cascade dropping into a fresh, cool swimming pool.

7. Go for a feed at the Muri Night Markets

The perfect spot for local eats from family-run stalls, these markets run evenings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 5pm. You will find all sorts of dishes at the Muri night markets, and they all cost no more than $15. Along with a huge variety of food choices, you’ll find plenty of free entertainment and warm Rarotongan culture.

“Make sure you try the seafood curry, and the freshly made crepes filled with sliced bananas and whipped cream and topped with Baileys. ”
