Find your perfect island escape in the Cook Islands

Just a short hop from home, the Cook Islands welcome you with turquoise lagoons, sugar-white beaches, rugged volcanic peaks and lush jungle trails that call out to be explored.
As Pacific explorer James Upton once said, "If you’ve not travelled to the Cook Islands, you will never really know what beauty is." And we couldn’t agree more.
Every island is a postcard — but it’s the laid-back charm, the heartfelt kia orana, and the warm smiles of the locals that make this place feel like more than just a holiday.
Whether you're after romance under swaying palms, quality family time by the beach, or adventure on jungle trails and coral reefs, the Cook Islands serve it all up with that effortless, unhurried island magic.
Island vibes and cultural delights
In the Cook Islands, culture isn’t something you seek out — it’s something you feel, everywhere. From the beat of the drums to the scent of fresh frangipani, island life hums with music, art and kai.
Most resorts, along with Te Vara Nui Village, host unforgettable Island Night Shows and Dinners – where you’ll experience traditional dance, soul-stirring songs and local dishes passed down through generations.
For a deeper dive into the island spirit, head to the Punanga Nui Saturday markets in Avarua. Wrap yourself in a colourful pareu (sarong), nibble on fresh-cut tropical fruit, and browse handmade quilts and local crafts as the vibe buzzes all around you.
And whatever you do — don’t miss an umukai feast. This traditional island-style banquet sees meat and veggies wrapped in banana leaves and slow-cooked underground on hot volcanic rock. The result? Smoky, tender, full-of-love flavour you’ll be dreaming about long after your tan fades.

Embrace the 'island time'
Once you arrive in Rarotonga, you’ll soon find that you’re on ‘island time.’ Locals let life unfold at its own pace without hurry, so get into the tropical cadence with a lazy stroll along the beach.
Since the island is so small, you can get around it in less than an hour — but stretch it out and hunt for your own hidden gems. It’s easy to hop on a bike or scooter and drive yourself! When you reach the southern side of the island, be sure to take a inroad to get to Wigmore’s Waterfall. If you’re cycling, this sparkling cascade and deep, cool pool offers a chance to escape the heat. Organised tours can also lead you through the exotic jungle on a quad bike or out on a guided mountain trek.
As you’d expect, the island is brimming with water activities: Snorkelling, scuba diving, reef cruises, fishing charters, sailing experiences and much more! The pulse of the island starts racing when the sun goes down, head to Avarua town to Trader Jack’s and let the party really start.
Experience Rarotonga over water
If there’s one must-do while in Raro, it’s jumping aboard Captain Tama’s Lagoon Cruizes (yep, that’s exactly how they spell it — and trust us, the fun starts there).
This is no ordinary boat ride. You’ll cruise the turquoise waters of Muri Lagoon in a glass-bottom boat, spying colourful reef fish and maybe even a cheeky octopus or two. Then it’s time to dive in – snorkel gear on and into a world of coral gardens and marine magic.
But the real highlight? That comes after the swim. You’ll pull up to Koromiri Island for a delicious barbecue lunch, served with island humour and a generous side of local entertainment. Think coconut husking, sarong-tying demos, and stories that’ll have you laughing all the way back to shore.

Beyond Rarotonga: The Outer Islands
While Rarotonga is a star in its own right, those who wander beyond are truly rewarded. The Outer Islands are where you’ll find unspoilt beaches, authentic culture, and a sense of serenity that feels worlds away.
Aitutaki is the jewel of the Cooks — an untouched lagoon paradise that’s every bit as romantic as the brochures suggest. But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just for honeymooners. With bright white sands, blindingly blue waters, and warm island hospitality, this is paradise, full stop.
Feast on the freshest seafood, soak up the soulful harmonies at CICC Church in Arutanga on a Sunday morning, or lace up your walking shoes and climb to the top of Mt Maungapu – the highest point on the island – for views that will leave you speechless.
For something truly unexpected, head to Vaipae, often dubbed the "Hollywood of the Cook Islands" thanks to its vibrant cultural performances. After dark, make your way to Black Rock Bar or The Boat Shed for a touch of island nightlife with a laid-back twist.
Want to go even further off the map? Explore the lesser-known gems of Atiu, Mangaia and Mauke – where caving, bonefishing, and diving into ancient reef systems await the intrepid. These islands are raw, real and rich in story.
