The best time to visit the Cook Islands is from April to October, when you’ll enjoy warm, dry weather with lower humidity - perfect for beach days and lagoon activities.
November to March is hotter and more humid with occasional tropical rain, but still a great time for fewer crowds and better deals.
Peak periods for Kiwis are NZ school holidays, so book early to secure the best availability and deals.
How long should I spend in the Cook Islands?
Most New Zealand travellers stay 5 to 7 nights in Rarotonga.
If you want to visit Aitutaki as well, aim for 7 to 10 nights to experience both islands at a relaxed pace.
Where to go on holiday in the Cook Islands?
Top destinations include:
- Rarotonga is the main island with restaurants, beaches and easiest access
- Aitutaki boasts an iconic turquoise lagoon and luxury escapes
- Atiu is home to epic caves, unique birdlife and offers eco-adventures
- Mangaia has rugged landscapes and immersive cultural experiences
Are the Cook Islands a good holiday destination for Kiwis?

Are the Cook Islands in the same time zone as NZST?
No, the Cook Islands are 22 to 23 hours behind New Zealand (depending on daylight saving).
When you fly from NZ, you’ll usually arrive the day before, as you cross the international date line, which makes it feel like you’ve gained a day.
What is the currency in the Cook Islands?
The Cook Islands use the New Zealand Dollar (NZD).
Local coins and notes are unique to the Cook Islands and can’t be used outside the country, so spend or exchange them before leaving.

You’ll need a passport with 6 months validity from your return date, plus a return or onward ticket. Stay up to date on visa requirements on Safe Travel.

What should I pack for my trip to the Cook Islands?
Pack light and tropical:

Hiring a car is recommended for flexibility, especially on Rarotonga. NZ drivers licences are valid and driving is easy as there’s one main road around the island. Our biggest advice – avoid parking under coconut trees!
Scooters are popular too, but helmets are required, and you may need a local licence.
How can I get around the Cook Islands without a car?
There are two busses - the clockwise and anti-clockwise busses, and it does take around 45 minutes to circumnavigate the whole island of Rarotonga. Taxis and guided tours also help you get around.

"Travel is the healthiest addiction" - Anonymous
Why I love travel:
For me life is about experiences, not things! I love exploring new places, cultures, environments. I see travel for me as an addiction - I just can't stay away and helping people is so rewarding.
My travel tips:
- Travel as soon as you can, don't delay as life is too short.
- If you want an adventure head to Antarctica or the Arctic before anywhere else.
- Always carry a change of clothes, any valuables and medication in your carry-on luggage. The House of Travel online brochures are a great source of information when planning your journey then we can finetune your holiday for you.
My top 5 destinations:
- Africa- Serengeti plains!!! Perfect place to go to create family memories with our young adult kids! Adventure to encounter wildlife and camping in the Serengeti!
- Dubai- the mix of culture, sights, architecture, markets, desert and the malls - even though shopping is not my thing.
- Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska - I was incredibly fortunate to have a family holiday in Canada, Alaska, Las Vegas and California and I'll never forget rafting on the Nenana River, rounding a bend to see a moose and her two calves taking a drink …. we all forgot to keep paddling; it was an incredible sight!
- Rome - the history and the chaos of a bustling city it offers so much culture with a cool vibe.
- Thailand - I lived near Chiang Mai as an exchange student many years ago and have been back to the country three times. It is great for families, couples, singles with so much to see and do.
What's in my suitcase?
- Happiness - I'm always in my happy place as soon as I travel.
- Active wear - Our holidays always include adventure and plenty of travel.
- A copy of my passport and insurance policy number and phone number, in case I lose my carryon bag and phone.

House of Travel Dunedin
I've been immersed in the world of travel since 1987- first as a tour leader, then as a travel advisor, and now as Owner Operator of House of Travel Dunedin City, travel has never just been a profession for me: it's been a lifelong pursuit of discovery.
Over the years, I've explored more than 105 countries, experiencing travel in its rawest and most authentic forms- from double-decker buses through Europe and rickshaws in Asia, to horseback journeys in the Middle East and dugout canoes deep in Central Africa. Along the way there have been camels, elephants, donkeys and bicycles- each journey adding to a deep understanding of what true adventure feels like.
Today, while the sense of adventure remains as strong as ever, I pair it with a passion for refined, seamless travel. Recent journeys have taken me to destinations such as Myanmar, India, Vietnam, Japan, Türkiye, Zimbabwe, Peru, Argentina and Antarctica- experiencing them through a lens of greater comfort, exclusive access, and considered detail.
Many of my clients share this same evolution- still driven by curiosity and a desire to explore the extraordinary, but with an appreciation for quality, ease, and exceptional experiences. With my breadth of knowledge across both adventurous or luxury travel, I specialise in designing journeys that combine the thrill of discovery with the comfort and sophistication you deserve.
Whether it's a remote expedition, a tailor-made cultural journey, or a high-end escape with unique touches, I take pride in crafting travel experiences that are seamless, distinctive, and unforgettable.
I look forward to helping you discover the world- your way.
