Best stopover cities when flying from New Zealand to Europe

Turn your transit into a mini holiday

If you’re travelling to Europe, a stopover decision is inevitable. Do you sacrifice a few days at your final destination to experience somewhere new—somewhere you might never visit otherwise? Or do you push straight through to your end destination, saving every minute there?

Whatever you choose, our House of Travel consultants have put together a handy guide to our favourite stopover destinations, perfect for turning a transit into a mini adventure.

JUST A FEW HOURS

SINGAPORE

Singapore’s Changi Airport isn’t just an airport—it’s consistently voted one of the world’s best stopovers, and for good reason. Transferring is a breeze, with efficient staff, short queues, and easy terminal connections. But it’s the facilities that really steal the show.

Relax with a drink in the rooftop cactus garden, take a dip in the open-air pool, wander through the butterfly sanctuary, catch a movie, or even book a quick nap in one of the Snooze Lounges located between terminals 1-4.

SEE MORE: If your stopover is at least five hours, hop on the free 2.5-hour city bus tour for a taste of Singapore beyond the terminals.

KUALA LUMPUR

Known simply as KLIA, Kuala Lumpur International Airport is one of the world's largest and most modern. Most of the airlines are housed under one roof, making it very easy when transiting. Stretch your legs in the spacious terminals, enjoy a pampering session at one of the airport lounges or spa facilities, or explore the art installations and gardens dotted throughout the airport.

SEE MORE: Got time to grab a bargain? There's a massive outlet mall just six kilometres away.

SEOUL

Seoul’s award-winning Incheon International Airport is as captivating as it is fascinating. Its design pays tribute to Korean culture, with a roof inspired by a traditional temple, and features mini museums and cultural experiences including a reenactment of the royal guard ceremony. What truly sets this airport apart are its unique facilities like a spa, ice-skating rink, casino, gardens and even a gold course.,

SEE MORE: You don’t even have to leave the airport to learn more about Korea, they have a museum of Korean culture within the terminal.

A NIGHT OR TWO

Hong Kong

Hong Kong is where East meets West, and modern life flows seamlessly alongside ancient tradition. Explore vibrant markets, indulge in luxurious wellness experiences, or embark on a culinary adventure, from Michelin-starred fine dining to bustling street food stalls, there’s a flavor for every palate. With an excellent public transport system, getting around is a breeze, making even a short stopover feel like a full Hong Kong experience.

DO MORE: Discover shops, restaurants, and museums at Victoria Peak. A favourite with the locals, we recommend visiting on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

NEW YORK

New York is one of those cities that captivates instantly—iconic, electrifying, and endlessly mesmerising. Beyond Times Square and the Statue of Liberty, the city pulses with iconic architecture, world-class Broadway shows, art galleries, and green escapes like Central Park. Savor global flavors from Caribbean kitchens to classic New York cheesecake, and feel why the “Big Apple” is truly one of the world’s great cities.

DO MORE: Do as the locals do and head to a rooftop bar. Our pick, enjoy a cocktail in a cosy igloo at 230 Fifth – the views out across Manhattan are incredible

A MINI BREAK

TOKYO

Be enchanted by Japan, where cutting-edge modernity meets timeless tradition. In Tokyo, neon-lit skyscrapers and futuristic technology sit side by side with serene oriental gardens, historic temples, and hidden backstreet teahouses. Wander the city to uncover colonial architecture, sip cocktails in rooftop bars with panoramic views, and sample foodie delights at bustling markets or tucked-away eateries.

DO MORE: Visit the 45th floor observation deck of the Metropolitan Government Building for the best views of the city – and it’s completely free!

VANCOUVER

Nestled between mountains and ocean, Vancouver is a paradise for lovers of culture and the outdoors alike. This relaxed yet sophisticated coastal city invites you to explore charming neighborhoods, savor local flavors and market treats, and immerse yourself in art, shopping, and natural wonders. With lively bars, entertainment, and endless scenic beauty, even a short stopover in Vancouver feels like a complete getaway.

DO MORE: Catch a bus to Kitsilano Beach and watch the sunset from local favourite, The Boathouse. Don’t miss their Happy Hour from 2–5pm!

Why Kiwis love stopovers

  • Break up the journey: Especially useful if you’re travelling with kids.

  • See more for less: You’re already halfway around the world, so why not add another culture or cuisine?

  • Recharge properly: A comfy bed and shower before Europe can make all the difference.

Stopovers are easy to build into your ticket at the time of booking, and usually far cheaper than booking a separate trip.

For many travellers, that quick “extra” holiday ends up being one of the most memorable parts of the journey.
