On a Solo'ish adventure

Got an inner urge to get out and explore, but none of your travel buddies can make it happen? One big misconception is that you must be single if you’re travelling alone. But that’s definitely not the case. Many of our solo travellers have partners at home, busy professionals wanting to escape the rat-race to millennials enjoying their precious annual leave. Solo journeys are fast growing in popularity and for those who love travelling on their own but also enjoy the company of like-minded people.
Megan Bishop from House of Travel Taupo shares some of her favourite holiday ideas for going solo.
1. Small group adventure
Sure, you could hit the road all on your own. But going with a small group gives your solo trip more structure, guidance and safety, letting you get head-to-toe immersed in our world.
G Adventures have introduced a new travel style – called Solo-ish. They are exclusive for solo travellers, so everyone on the tour is a stranger at the start. You can choose to share a room or go with the My Own Room option. The tour leaders are females and travellers from 18 years and up are welcome on their tours.

2. Safari for one, please.
One trick for savvy solo travellers is avoiding hefty single supplements. Travelling like a leopard and prefer the solitary life?
Join fellow singles for a stay at South Africa’s family run private game reserve Makutsi Safari Springs, which charges guests the same price, whether or not they travel in a herd. Sitting on 12,000 acres of pristine wildlife conservation reserve, it offers individual bungalows, nature warm mineral spring pools and fantastic game viewing.

3. Forget flying solo. It’s time to sail solo!
You may board the ship yourself, but on a cruise you’ll never feel alone once onboard (unless you want to!). Cruising is a popular way to holiday as there is always something to do, people to meet, and it is a safe and hassle-free way to travel. Most ships have meet-and-greet sessions for solo cruisers and some have specific tables assigned for those who may not want to eat alone, plus there is a wide range of activities and events on offer, providing plenty of ways to make friends onboard.
HOT Tip:
Many ships offer single staterooms designed just for one with prices to match. Norwegian Cruise Line offers single studios on its resort-style ships, which you’ll find heading to Alaska, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. No surprise these rooms are extremely popular, we recommend booking early.

4. All the single ladies!
Women’s-only small group tours are really taking off. Nearly 80% of travellers join these groups alone, so you’re sure to find instant friends. House of Travel can even match you with a roommate before you depart. And just like that, somebody to share your bottle of chardonnay with!
