Your itinerary
One of the locals’ favourite ways to unwind after a long flight is at a neighbourhood geothermal pool. Soaking in warm waters while breathing in the crisp Icelandic air is wonderfully refreshing. You might also enjoy a walk through the charming city centre, a visit to a museum, or simply relaxing with a coffee in one of Reykjavík’s cosy cafes. Overnight in Reykjavík.
Heritage site, is where the world’s oldest continuing parliament was founded in the 10th century. It’s also where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, giving you the rare chance to walk between two continents. Continue to Gullfoss, the “Golden Waterfall,” a breathtaking double cascade, before exploring the Geysir hot spring area with Strokkur, bubbling mud pools, and steaming vents. Visit a family-run farm where tomatos are grown using organic geothermal energy, tour the greenhouse and taste the farm’s sweet Icelandic tomatoes. Dinner and overnight in the Golden Circle area.

Explore the enchanting Þjórsárdalur Valley, with its ever-changing landscapes of birch woods, sandy lava fields, rivers, and waterfalls. On clear days, you’ll see Mt. Hekla, the region’s towering, beautiful volcano. Visit Stöng to view a replica Viking-age longhouse, once buried by one of Hekla’s eruptions. Continue along the scenic farmlands of Iceland’s South Shore, stopping to admire the picturesque Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, each with its own unique charm. Journey on to Dyrhólaey and the dramatic Reynisfjara black sand beach, where thundering waves crash against striking basalt cliffs. Dinner and overnight in the Vík area.

Explore the southern reaches of Vatnajökull National Park, driving across vast sand plains shaped by glacial outwash as you head east. In the park’s renowned Skaftafell area, take in striking contrasts of lush green landscapes, black sands, and majestic glaciers. Continue to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon to witness the breathtaking sight of icebergs drifting across the serene waters, and visit the nearby Diamond Beach, where glistening ice fragments rest on black sands before floating out to sea. Enjoy an overnight stay in Höfn, a charming fishing port beneath the shadow of Vatnajökull Glacier.

Drive through the scenic Almannaskarð Pass, pausing to admire the dramatic coastline before continuing into the Eastfjords, where towering mountains plunge straight into the sea. Along the way, you’ll pass picturesque villages, each with its own unique history and charm. In the tiny village of Breiðdalsvík, visit the Beljandi Microbrewery to sample craft beer brewed in a rustic warehouse lovingly transformed by the local community in 2017. Your journey ends in Egilsstaðir, a town set near Iceland’s largest forest and a lake said to harbor a legendary friendly monster. Dinner and overnight in the Egilsstaðir area.

Traverse the vast, hauntingly beautiful highland desert of Möðrudalsöræfi en route to the Lake Mývatn area. Stop at Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, before continuing to Námaskarð Pass, known for its boiling mud pools and vivid geothermal colours. Explore Lake Mývatn’s natural wonders, walk among the pseudo craters at Skútustaðir, and peek into Grjótagjá, a cave with underground hot springs. Discover the otherworldly lava formations at Dimmuborgir. End the day with dinner and stay overnight in the Mývatn area.

Visit the magnificent Goðafoss, one of North Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. Continue to Akureyri, the colourful northern “capital,” with charming streets and stunning views over Eyjafjörður fjord. Overnight in Akureyri.

The Skagafjörður region is renowned as one of Iceland’s finest horse-breeding areas. Meet the unique Icelandic horse and experience its special fifth gait, the tölt. Cross the Holtavörðuheiði plateau into West Iceland and drive through Borgarfjörður, celebrated for its volcanic landscapes, wooded scenery, and Viking heritage. Hike to the top of Grábrók crater for panoramic views, listen to the powerful waters of Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most potent hot spring, and admire the striking Hraunfossar waterfalls, where vivid blue waters flow through black lava formations. Nearby, the Barnafoss waterfall dazzles with its brilliant colours. End the day with dinner and an overnight stay in the Borgarfjörður area.

Explore the diverse landscapes of Snæfellsjökull National Park, crowned by Snæfellsjökull glacier atop a dormant volcano that last erupted in 250AD. See Kirkjufell, one of Iceland’s most photographed mountains, and stroll along the uniquely pebbled Djúpalónssandur Beach.
Visit the picturesque harbour village of Arnarstapi to admire its striking basalt rock formations. Afterwards, return to Reykjavík for your final night stay in Iceland’s colourful capital.
