Sailing Turkey: Discover the Magic of the Turquoise Coast

What makes sailing Turkey so special?

Istanbul, Turkey

Exploring Turkey’s Turquoise Coast by gulet cruise.

When New Zealand travellers think about their next great overseas adventure, Europe, Asia and the Pacific often top the list. But increasingly, Turkey travel is capturing the imagination of travellers seeking something a little different - a place where ancient history, natural beauty, warm hospitality and world‑class cuisine come together in one unforgettable journey.

One of the most enchanting ways to experience this country is to sail Turkey’s Turquoise Coast aboard a traditional wooden gulet. Slow, scenic and sun‑drenched, this style of sailing offers a deeply immersive way to explore Turkey’s Mediterranean shoreline - far from crowds and firmly centred on relaxation.

Whether you’re planning your first travel to Turkey adventure or returning to discover a new side of the country, sailing the Turquoise Coast is a travel experience that stays with you long after you return to New Zealand.

Why sail Turkey?

A unique way to experience Turkey travel.

Unlike a standard cruise or land‑based itinerary, sailing Turkey allows you to experience the coastline at a relaxed pace. Days are guided by the rhythm of the sea - swim stops in crystal‑clear bays, leisurely lunches on deck and quiet afternoons drifting between fishing villages and ancient ruins.

For New Zealanders travelling long‑haul, this slower style of travel is particularly appealing. After the flight from Auckland, sailing offers a chance to truly unwind while still discovering new places every day.

Sailing Turkey is about simplicity: salty air, sunshine, gentle sailing and the feeling that time has slowed just for you.

The Turquoise Coast: Turkey’s Mediterranean treasure.

Stretching along Turkey’s southwest coast between Bodrum, Marmaris, Gocek and Fethiye, the Turquoise Coast (also known as the Turkish Riviera) is famous for its vivid blue waters and dramatic scenery.

Here, pine‑covered hills tumble down to sheltered coves, ancient Lycian tombs overlook the sea and small seaside towns retain an authentic charm that’s becoming rare elsewhere in the Mediterranean.

This region is perfectly suited to gulet cruising, thanks to its calm waters, short sailing distances and abundance of protected bays - ideal for swimming, snorkelling and paddleboarding.

What is a gulet?

A gulet is a traditional Turkish wooden sailing boat, handcrafted and designed specifically for coastal cruising. Today’s gulets combine old‑world charm with modern comfort, featuring:

  • Spacious sun decks
  • Comfortable ensuite cabins
  • Shaded outdoor dining areas
  • Dedicated crew (captain, chef and deckhands)

For many travellers, a gulet is the highlight of their Turkey travel experience. Life on board is casual yet indulgent - wake up with the sun, swim before breakfast, enjoy freshly prepared meals and dine under the stars each night.

A typical day sailing Turkey.

One of the most frequently searched questions around sail Turkey holidays is: What is a day like on a gulet cruise?

While itineraries vary, here’s what you can generally expect:

Morning

Wake anchored in a quiet bay. Enjoy a traditional Turkish breakfast on deck - think fresh bread, olives, tomatoes, eggs and strong Turkish coffee - before jumping into the sea for an early swim.

Late morning to afternoon

Cruise to the next destination or bay. Stop to snorkel over reefs, float in turquoise water, or go ashore to explore small towns and archaeological sites.

Afternoon

Relax on deck with a book, soak up the sun or enjoy afternoon tea as the gulet sails on.

Evening

Anchor for the night. Enjoy a long dinner featuring local seafood, meze and regional dishes, often prepared with ingredients sourced that same day.

This gentle rhythm is what makes sailing Turkey such a restorative and memorable experience.

Highlights along the Turquoise Coast.

Bodrum

Often the starting point for gulet journeys, Bodrum blends history with a lively marina scene. Visit Bodrum Castle, explore white‑washed streets or simply enjoy waterfront dining.

Gocek Islands

A favourite among sailors, this area is dotted with lush islands and calm bays ideal for swimming and kayaking.

Fethiye

Surrounded by mountains, Fethiye offers access to ancient Lycian ruins, including rock tombs carved into cliffs above the harbour.

Butterfly Valley

Accessible mainly by boat, this dramatic gorge is home to dozens of butterfly species and a stunning natural beach.

These destinations showcase why Turkey travel by sea reveals a side of the country many travellers never see.

History at your doorstep.

Turkey is one of the most historically rich countries in the world and sailing allows you to access ruins that are often unreachable by road.

Along the Turquoise Coast, you may explore:

  • Ancient Lycian and Greek ruins
  • Sunken cities visible through clear water
  • Remote temples and amphitheatres perched above the sea

For Kiwi travellers with an interest in history and culture, this blend of learning and leisure is a major drawcard when planning travel to Turkey.

Turkish cuisine: a highlight of sailing Turkey.

Food is central to the Turkish travel experience, and on a gulet, it becomes part of the journey.

Expect:

  • Daily freshly caught seafood
  • A wide variety of meze (small plates)
  • Grilled meats and vegetables
  • Regional olive oils, herbs and spices

Meals are shared around a large table, fostering a relaxed, social atmosphere. For Kiwi travellers who value good food and conversation, this is often one of the most talked‑about parts of sailing Turkey.

When is the best time to sail Turkey?

For sailing the Turquoise Coast, the best months are May to October.

  • May to June and September to October: Warm weather, quieter ports, ideal for couples and relaxed travel
  • July to August: Hot, lively and bustling - perfect for families and social travellers

For New Zealand travellers planning well in advance, shoulder seasons often offer the best balance of weather, availability and value.

Is Turkey safe for New Zealand travellers?

Safety is a common question when researching Turkey travel from NZ.

The Turquoise Coast is considered one of the safest and most relaxed regions in the country, with tourism being central to local life. Gulet sailing offers an added sense of security, as you travel with an experienced local crew who know the region intimately.

Quote: “Never pass up a bathroom”

About me: With over 2 years of solo travel across 40+ countries, I am passionate about immersing myself in new cultures and uncovering the unique experiences each destination has to offer. Fluent in Spanish, Latin America is my particular area of experience and expertise. Whether you're after an exciting adventure or a peaceful getaway, I’m committed to designing a memorable and seamless trip tailored specifically to you.

Why I love travel: It allows me to escape the sometimes repetitive nature of daily life. I enjoy experiencing new places or returning to ones that I love. I like making connections with people from places around the world and having experiences that can’t be replicated.

My travel tips:

  • Meet the locals Almost all of my favourite and most cherished travel experiences have involved meeting and making friends with the local people. It is a sure-fire way to have a more unique and intimate holiday experience.
  • When in Rome A cliché but one to that will enrich your travel, observe how the locals live and learn from it. Try the local brew or dish, join in on the fun. Also respect local customs and traditions, this will allow a richer and safer experience.
  • Expect the unexpected- Be ready for unforeseen circumstances that will inevitably occur at some point during a trip. If you are expectant and prepared for troublesome scenarios you can save yourself a lot of grief. After all, you want to make your break from reality as stress free as possible.

My top 3 favourite destinations:

  • Colombia- An up and coming travel destination, a country cursed with the reputation earned from its past. It is extremely geographically diverse and amazing bang for your buck. I still haven’t found a country with warmer and friendlier people.
  • Spain- A country full of amazing destinations to discover, with a rich history and a world class gastronomical scene. The fun loving people, the nightlife and the picturesque towns with uniquely their Spanish architecture are a must experience.
  • Mexico- Mexico is a country which is truly fascinating, an amazing place to get to know. It’s a big country with lots to explore - like the US it is made up of states (32), the more you see the more you’ll want to see. It is full of the most beautiful places you’ve never heard of. The locals are extremely friendly and of course the cuisine one of the best and most famous on the globe.

What’s in my suitcase:

  • Spare phone, cables and a travel adaptor- Fact is electronics are a very important travel tool and to be prepared is important so you don’t have to go in the dark.
  • A Journal- A great way to record all the little details and memorable moments. When moving fast and or experiencing a lot we naturally forget things. Writing it down will help to recall in future and also to have what you’ve written forever is something special.
  • Travel cubes- Will help you to keep your suitcase nice and organised for easy packing and ultimately will save you time making things easier to find.

My most memorable travel stories:

  • Walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain together with part of the Camino Portugues from Lisbon to Porto – totalling 1200kms. My hiking shoes broke so I did the last 1000kms in Sandals.
  • Doing a 32 day Top Deck bus tour around Europe. Easily one of the best months of my life full of laughs and all round good times. I made some strong friendships and saw a lot in such a short space of time.
