Located in northeastern Vietnam, in the South China Sea, the bay encompasses an area of approximately 1,553 square kilometers and is known for its stunning natural landscapes, including thousands of limestone karsts and islets rising from the emerald waters of the Gulf. The bay is steeped in folklore: legend has it that a dragon came to protect the Vietnamese during a war in the ancient times (Ha long is literally translated as “descending dragon”), and each islet represents a spine of the dragon's back.
